LEGO Minecraft Set# 21102

My six year old son is a Lego nut so when he saw one of his friends playing Minecraft and he found out there was a Minecraft Lego set, he had to have it! Luckily, his Grammy is very generous and bought it for him as a surprise gift.

This set contains 480 pieces and is recommended for ages 10 and up. But my six year old is a very experience Lego builder and was able to put this together (mostly) on his own in just under two hours. He really enjoyed building it and felt very proud of himself when he finally finished it. He never actually played Minecraft but has seen his friend playing it and has watched some YouTube videos of gameplay. I'm sure it is a game that he will enjoy once he is allowed to play it.

The set consists of four little "micro worlds" that can be attached to each other in various combinations. Each of theĀ four sections also have an upper layer and a "hidden" lower layer that you can only see if you remove the upper layer. It's an intricate build with mostly small Lego pieces so it's a slow process. Be warned that this is not a physically big set! It's actually quite small. Instead of a standard mini-figure, the character is made up of little pieces that we call "one-peggers". They kind of remind me of the little playing pieces from the Lego board games.

There's lots of details in this set, it's just that everything is on a small scale. One of the "worlds" has a river or stream and it looks like one has some hot lava. There are also trees and a house. There are caves underneath to explore and some things that look like jewels inside.

I'm not sure how much play value there is with this, especially since neither my son or I have played Minecraft. Maybe if you are a Minecraft fanatic then you will get a lot more out of this set. That being said, the online reviews of this set are overwhelmingly positive with over 50% of the Amazon reviews giving it 5 stars.

Those who gave it a lower rating were disappointed by the small size (didn't they read the specs and look at the pictures?) and some were put off by what they perceived to be to high of a price tag. Apparently when the set was first released it was at a higher price point but it has come down since then. At least that's the way I understood the situation. Legos are always sold at a premium because the demand for them is high and they can get people to pay those higher prices!

Here's a video review from the great EvanTubeHD channel. His videos are what inspired me to start my own toy site. Someday I hope to be able to produce content half as good as his!
